Art Canada Institute releases “William Raphael: Life & Work”

The long-awaited William Raphael: Life & Work is now officially live on the website of the Art Canada Institute (ACI) — marking a major milestone in the scholarship of early Canadian art and the legacy of one of Montreal’s most important 19th-century painters.

This publication is the most comprehensive study of William Raphael to date and a triumph of collaboration, research, and long-standing commitment to preserving Canada’s cultural history.

This new ACI volume is the result of original, thoroughly researched scholarship by Pierre-Olivier Ouellet, whose work offers new insight into Raphael’s life, technique, and historical significance. Ouellet brings clarity and understanding to a career that has often been under-recognized in the Canadian art canon.

The book also reflects the extraordinary vision and leadership of Sara Angel, the founder and Executive Director of the Art Canada Institute. Under her guidance, ACI continues to set the benchmark for accessible, authoritative scholarship on Canadian artists. This free online publication is another example of her unwavering commitment to building a more inclusive record of Canadian art history.

The release of this book also stands as a tribute to entrepreneur and philanthropist Jonathan Wener, whose dedication to preserving the legacy of his great-grandfather William Raphael has been steadfast and profound. His long-term commitment to research, scholarship, collecting and public awareness has played an essential role in bringing Raphael’s story back into focus for a new generation of scholars, collectors, and museum audiences.

This publication is in large part the culmination of that work.
